Cost of Life Day

'EU Debate On the Ground' sends 4 journalists 3 days to 1
European city for on-scene reporting and a live debate.
At this year’s summer Babelackademy the local teams decided to contribute to the mission with a “Cityblog on the ground”. We kick off with the Cost of Life Day...
It's the perfect moment to realize the cafebabel "Cost of Life Day", which was voted best European wide project at the Babelackademy. The first "EU Debate On the Ground" takes place from October 22nd to 25th in Tallinn an,d the debate will be on the EURO, because Estonia is expected to change its currency soon.
The Cost of Life Day means:

Each team sends out three members who
- Go see a movie
- Take public transport to get there
- Have a kebab (or some other comparable sandwich) before the film
- Discuss the film afterwards over a drink
Then we compare: where is life the most/least expensive.
The handsome reward besides lots of glory and babelfame will be the insertion of your article in the "EU Debate On the Ground" dossier of the magazine.
It's the moment to get the network rolling! Leave a comment, tell us when YOU make the Cost of Lifa Day in your city...

Labas!
My point is that we should all cover the topic of debates before it happens in Tallinn, so Tallinn team knows a situation in Europe about the topic on the debate date and then stronger arguments can appear.
So we should all know the topic like NOW
Best,
Erika
You are right Erika. I have changed the post accordingly.
The topic of the debate is the EURO and it would be perfect to combine it with the COST OF LIFE DAY, no? We can do it even on the day of the debate!
xx
OLé
Yeah
I try to speak english...
News of Babel Auvergne !
1/ we published our first articles.... about society, economy, politics, etc...
2/ We are a very very good team of six people (3 historian students, 1 geographics students, and 2 law students...) and we will recrut others !
3/ If you need, we all are ready to organize a Europe on the ground during the year....
4/ for the "cost of life day", Benjamin and Nicolas want to interview people about that, asking "what you would decide if you were an euopean deputee to fight again high cost of life ?"
see you monday !
Fabien
Hi,
I've read through this post but couldn't find answers for which day is the day before the debate and is there any timetable-suggestion, "stations" on CoLD? I mean morning-coffee, common lunch, afternoon programmes, cinema, shopping, nightlife, parties, etc.
Thanks,
Csilla
The debate in Tallinn is on the 25th October. By then all local teams should have their “Cost of Life” experiment online.
It’s very easy in fact: we will compare the cost of three people who
1) Go together see a movie
2) Take public transport to get there
3) Have a kebab (or some other comparable sandwich) before the film
4) Discuss the film afterwards in a pub having a beer
You can of course take the whole team on this a trip, but count only the expenses of three persons (so that we can compare easily).
You can do the experiment on any day in between now and the Tallinn debate. Just make sure that the post is online on the October 25th.
I am eager to her which films you choose (and to find out where life is best with my small cafebabel salary
Questions? Remarks ?
Say it in the comments section!
OLé
You're very tricky but I don't mind
already got the answers & Budapest Team is ready to do the experiment!
Great Csilla,
Budapest wins the speedy reply price
But will you win the Cost of Life Day? I think in Sofia you get much more for your money…
Hello guys,
Here we go with the Catalan cost of life.
1) Go together see a movie: 6:40€ per person. For exemple, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the bad film about Barcelona by Woody Allen.
2) Take public transport to get there 1:25€ a travel by metro or bus per person. If you go by public cycle it is nearly for free.
3) Have a kebab (or some other comparable sandwich) before the film: 4€ each kebab
4) Discuss the film afterwards in a pub having a beer 2-2,5 € a middle paint (33 cl), 4-4,5€ a paint (50 cl)
For sure, Barcelona won't be the cheapest city.
6:40€ that’s nothing compared to Paris. Without student reduction you pay 9,50€ in most movie theatres. Definitely too much for a bad film!
Thanks Albert for the Catalan situation. Please put this post on the Barcelona blog, so that we can link all cities for the 25th October.
Cheers
Ole
Let's see what is the situation in Istanbul..
1) Go together see a movie: 6€ per person.
2) Take public transport to get there 0.90€ a travel by metro or bus per person.
3) Have a kebab or lahmacun 4€
4) Discuss the film afterwards in a pub having a beer (50 cl) 3,5 euro,
cheers:)

Hi Ole,
Depends what cinema you want to go... Big commercial cinemas are obviously
more expensive than small alternative ones...
Let us know what you want
M
Albert suggested Vicky Christina Barcelona.
If you don't like this one pick a another film but a cinema that would play the newest Woody Allen (so yes, commercial cinemas...sorry to say that Woody!)
